Tips and explanations
Safety first, then convenience, then looks. That is the order we think about garage doors, and it is the order these articles follow. Start with the sensor test; it takes a minute.

Repair & Maintenance
What happens if the report lists a stop-use item?
The door is parked in a safe position, usually closed, with the opener disconnected so nobody runs it by habit, and the reason is shown to you. The correction is explained and quoted as its own piece of work, and once it is done the door is retested through the balance, reversal and photo-eye checks before it goes back into daily service. Another door into the house or garage is used in the meantime. Garage Door Safety Inspection
My door has a lock bar. Should it be used with an opener?
Not while the opener is connected. If the slide lock is engaged and someone presses the remote, the opener pulls against a locked door and can bend the top section or strip its gear. On a door driven by an opener the lock is usually disabled or removed during a tune-up, and the opener's own hold on the door provides the security. If you want a manual lock for holidays, the technician can show you how to use it safely with the opener unplugged. Garage Door Tune-Up
Will the opener need adjusting afterwards?
Sometimes, but not always. Once the door runs true by hand, the trolley is reconnected and the opener is checked against its own travel limits and force; those are only reset if that check shows they have drifted, since many openers need no force change after a repair like this. The reversal is then checked against a block laid in the door's path and by interrupting the photo eyes from a safe distance. If the opener strained hard during the event, its arm and bracket are checked too. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens to the opener during the work?
It is disconnected at the release cord and unplugged before any hardware comes off, so the motor cannot pull on a door that is missing a section. After the new section is in and the door has been balanced by hand, the opener is reconnected and tested: its reversal against a board on the floor and its photo-eyes are checked every time, and the open and close limits or the force setting are reset only if that check shows they need it. Springs & Hardware
What can I do before the technician arrives?
Move vehicles out of the garage and clear anything stored against the walls near the tracks so both sides are reachable from floor to ceiling. If it is safe to do so, note where in the travel the noise or hesitation happens and whether any wheel looks chipped, crooked or riding on the track edge. Have the door's make and the date of any spring work handy if you know them. Leave the door as it is; there is no need to lubricate or adjust anything first. Garage Door Roller Replacement
How should I lubricate the hinges?
A short burst of silicone or white lithium spray made for garage doors on each hinge knuckle and roller stem, spring and autumn, then run the door a few times to work it in. Wipe away any excess. Skip heavy grease and general-purpose oil, which trap grit and salt against the steel. Leave the track dry and simply wipe it clean, since lubricant in the track makes wheels slide instead of roll. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Should I keep using the opener while the track is bent?
It is better to leave the door where it is and use another way in and out. An opener pushing a door through a damaged section pulls rollers out of the channel, twists the top section and can turn a small dent into a jammed door off its track. Industry guidance after any impact is to stop operating the door and have it assessed. Leaving it still keeps the repair small. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What is the difference between a lift cable and a safety cable?
A lift cable does the work: it connects the door's bottom corner to the spring system and carries the door's weight. A safety or containment cable does no lifting at all. It runs through the middle of an extension spring and is anchored at both ends so that if the spring breaks, the pieces stay put. Torsion springs sit on a shaft and do not need one. Openers & Access
Why will the door close only while I hold the wall button?
That is a built-in behaviour, not a new fault. When the sensor circuit reports a problem, most openers refuse to close from a remote but allow a constant-pressure close from the wall control, because someone standing there can see the doorway. It is a strong signal that the photo eyes or their wiring need attention, and once the sensor issue is corrected the door closes normally from every control again. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Why does the door jerk or jump at the same spot every time?
A repeatable jolt at one point on the rail is usually a chain problem meeting a sprocket problem: a stiff link or a spread master link passing over worn sprocket teeth, so the chain rides up and drops a tooth. It can also be a burr or a splice plate on the rail where the trolley catches, or a roller on the door hanging up in the track at that height. The technician runs the door by hand first to tell the two apart. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
What is the difference between belt-drive repair and opener replacement?
Repair keeps the operator you have and renews the piece of the drive that has failed: the belt, its tension, the trolley, the idler pulley or the gear and sprocket at the motor head. It suits a unit with a sound motor and board, photo eyes near the floor and rolling-code remotes. Replacement is the answer when the operator predates those features or when its board or motor has failed and is no longer made. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
The door is frozen to the floor. Why does the opener reverse?
Because the operator is protecting the door. Its force setting is tuned to the small effort a balanced door needs, so a seal glued to the concrete by ice registers as an obstruction and the door heads back up rather than ripping the rubber or bowing the top panel. Loosen the seal with a plastic scraper or a hair dryer along the sill, then try again; a shovelled threshold before a cold night keeps it from recurring. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Do I need a new opener at the same time?
Not automatically. The decision depends on the existing operator's condition, compatibility, attachment and the customer's access goals. Door replacement and opener replacement are separate scopes that can be coordinated. Evaluating the mechanical door first keeps the operator decision grounded in how the new assembly moves and what equipment information supports. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Should I choose one steel skin or two?
The choice depends on how the garage is used and how much interior durability matters. A door with interior and exterior steel faces encloses the insulation and provides a finished surface inside. Other constructions may suit spaces with lighter use. Compare section rigidity, insulation description, interior appearance, care needs and the manufacturer's documented performance for each complete product. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can my existing garage door opener stay?
That depends on its condition, compatibility, rail geometry, mounting, and ability to operate the balanced replacement. The opener is assessed after the new door weight and reinforcement arrangement are known. If it remains suitable, it is connected through the specified operator bracket, then its limits, force settings, sensors, manual release, and reversal response are reset and tested. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Can a carriage-house door work with low headroom?
It often can, provided the available space is measured and a suitable track and spring arrangement exists for the selected door. Low-headroom layouts change how the top section turns and where hardware sits above the opening. Ceiling obstructions and opener geometry must be considered at the same time, so this condition belongs in the survey before the door configuration is ordered. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
